A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted by the laser is well absorbed by the pigment located in the follicles. During the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, long enough to heat up the hair and significantly impede the follicle’s ability to re-grow. The process also treats numerous hair follicles simultaneously. Therefore, laser is appropriate for treating even the largest areas of the body both quickly and effectively. The length of a treatment may last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. Its important to know that the hairs in an active growth phase are most affected by the laser. Therefore, more than one treatment will be necessary to achieve the best results.
The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type. Side effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which are desired clinical results that the follicle has responded to the treatment. You can expect anywhere from 4 to 6 treatments. Electrolysis is a simple process.
Electrolysis is the only FDA approved method for permanent hair removal services. Hair grows in cycles, therefore repeat treatments are necessary for permanent removal. Hair that have been waxed or tweezed may require more treatments due to the over stimulation of the hair follicle, resulting in distorted follicles and thicker, more coarse hair. Unlike laser, electrolysis can remove any hair color, laser is only effective on dark hair, not blonde, white or red. The electrologist inserts a very fine, sterile probe alongside the hair in the hair follicle. A very slight amount of electrical current is applied through this probe, which destroys the hair root, ending further growth. The skin is not punctured or harmed in any way, and for most people the entire process causes very little discomfort.
Most patients report tweezing and waxing to be much more uncomfortable then electrolysis treatments.
Electrolysis treatment programs are tailored to the patient’s needs. Many factors determine the number and length of treatments required.
